West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Agency
(WBREDA) plans to commission the first phase of its 2 MW wind power project
coming up at Frasergunj in South 24 Parganas, in May 2001.
The first phase comprises two windmills with a
capacity to generate 1 MW of power. WBREDA has invested Rs.8.5 crore in this phase.
The second phase of the project is expected to be
ready by April 2002.
This is the first wind based power project in West
Bengal. Encouraged by WBREDA initiative, corporates, including two Birla
companies, have shown interest in entering this sector in the State.
The Bakkhali-Frasergunj area and the Sagar Island
both on the Sundarban delta of the State have been identified as having a potential
of 20 MW and 60 MW of wind energy, respectively.
