The West Bengal government will unlock approx. 20 acres of land—equivalent to 20 football fields—in New Town’s Action Area II and III for residential, commercial, and mixed-use development. The land parcels will be auctioned on a freehold basis by HIDCO via e-auction next month.
Identified plots include two parcels of 4.1 acres each in Action Area II and three parcels of 7.3 acres, 3.2 acres, and 0.6 acres in Action Area III. The starting bid for the largest 7.3-acre plot is set at Rs 292.2 crore, while the smallest 0.6-acre parcel has a base price of Rs 26 crore. Government officials stated that New Town, a planned township on 7,598 acres, is being developed for a population of 10 lakh.
With Action Area I and parts of Area II already developed, the focus has now shifted to the remaining areas, including Action Area III. "New Town is fast emerging as one of India’s fastest-growing planned cities," said an official. Located just 10 km from Kolkata’s central business district, it already has 12,000 completed housing units, with 16,000 more under construction. Ultimately, the township is expected to host around 2 lakh dwelling units.
