The Yamuna riverfront project of Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is likely to be scrapped, as the committee appointed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) stated that the project would threaten the river's health.
The committee has recommended that a 52 km stretch of the Yamuna in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh be declared a 'conservation zone' as restoring the river's ecological functions is heavily dependent on the environmental flow through this stretch, particularly in the lean season.
The committee stated that the project would reduce the river's flood carrying capacity. It has recommended a ban on development activity within the river's current zone 'O' in Delhi and its active floodplains on the Uttar Pradesh side.
As for the existing constructions on the river zone, such as Akshardham Temple, CWG Village, and Delhi Secretariat, the report suggested treating them as a special zone with a separate regulatory regime.
