Unit 3 of Nuclear Power Corporation's
Tarapur Atomic Power Station in Maharashtra turned commercial on 18 August 2006.
The unit had achieved criticality on 21 May 2006 and was synchronized to the
grid on 15 June 2006.
Like Unit 4 (that was commissioned in
September 2005), Unit 3 is India's most advanced and largest power unit. Both
the units were designed indigenously by Nuclear Power Corporation of India.
Commercial operations of TAPS-Unit 3
has taken total capacity at the Tarapur station to 1,400 MWe through four units.
NPCIL's total capacity (and also of the country) has risen to 3,900 MWe.
By March 2007, the end of the ongoing
X Plan period, NPCIL has set a target of 4,120 MWe, while that for the end of
the XI Plan period (March 2012) is 10,280 MWe. The long term vision is attaining
20,000 MWe by 2020.
