The Union Government has accorded final approval to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port
Trust (JNPT) to set up a port based SEZ.
The proposed port based SEZ is likely to come up in 400 ha in the port area.
The JNPT is expected to work as a developer for the SEZ.
The JNPT has also appointed a consultant to formulate a master plan for the
development of the SEZ. The components of the master plan are likely to deal
with allocation for processing and non-processing area, industrial area planning
and commercial area planning.
Apart from this, the JNPT has lined-up major expansion programmes such as
development of a stand-alone container handling facility, a fourth container
terminal and deepening of the main harbour channel for accommodating 14 mtrs
draught vessels.
