The Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure (CCI) on 23 April 2010 approved the implementation of 'Ladakh Renewable
Energy Initiative' at a total cost of Rs 473 crore.
The project involves setting up of 30 small/micro hydel projects aggregating
to 23.5 MW capacity, setting up of about 300 solar photovoltaic (SPV) power
plants of 5-100 kW capacity, 2,000 SPV home lighting systems and about 40,000
solar thermal systems such as water heating, solar cookers, solar passive
buildings, solar green house etc.
Work on the project is likely to commence from June 2010 with completion
slated for December 2013.
The project will help in conserving diesel, kerosene and firewood and will be
beneficial to environment, as it will substitute generation from diesel thereby
reducing carbon emissions.
