The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has announced the development of ‘Greater Agartala’, a significant urban expansion initiative that will incorporate 51 municipal wards and 49 gram panchayats.
Speaking after an official meeting on 11 July, 2025, Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder said the Master Plan for the city’s expansion is nearly complete. The project is being designed to address the city’s needs for the next 20 years. “There was no master plan for Agartala city in the past. The first master plan started being developed after the BJP-led government came to power in 2018. The first step in that direction was completed today. This will help finalise routes for metro services, overbridges, roads, and industrial zones in and around the city in the future. All these aspects will be marked in the master plan,” the Mayor said.
Founded in 1838 by Maharaja Krishna Kishore Manikya Bahadur, Agartala’s municipal body was formed in 1871 under Maharaja Chandra Manikya, with AWB Power, the British Political Agent, as its first chairman. The last major expansion was in 2004, when the city’s area increased from 16.012 sq. km to 62.02 sq. km.
