The Indian Railways has successfully completed the 51.38-km Bairabi–Sairang railway line, connecting Mizoram's capital, Aizawl, to the national railway network—realising a vision first conceptualised in 1999.
Initially hindered by dense forests, challenging terrain, and limited working windows due to prolonged monsoons, the project was declared a National Project in 2008–09 and progressed through multiple phases of surveying and planning. With reconnaissance and geo-technical studies conducted by the Northeast Frontier Railway and RITES between 2003 and 2011, the groundwork was laid for construction. Land acquisition was completed by 2014–15, followed by the foundation stone laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2014. Active construction began in 2015–16, battling adverse conditions.
The project was finally commissioned in June 2025 by the Commissioner of Railway Safety and is set to be officially inaugurated by PM Modi. This strategic link is expected to enhance connectivity, promote regional development, and integrate Mizoram more closely with the rest of India.
