Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a proposal for a seven-km-long elevated road project in Silchar town valued at Rs 1,200 crore. On 24 August, 2024, the CM concluded his three-day visit to the three districts of Barak Valley. He chaired a comprehensive review meeting with key stakeholders, focusing on road and healthcare facilities' improvement in Silchar and surrounding districts during the visit.
The project will be executed in two phases - Phase I will span from Capital Point to Chittaranjan Statue, covering 3.5 km, and Phase-II will extend from Capital Point to Ramnagar for a length of 3.5 km. It is anticipated to be completed within two-and-a-half years.
As many as 13 key roads are be repaired before Durga Puja, and Rs 14 crore will be sanctioned. Additionally, the Rangirkhari to Silchar Medical College and Hospital road will be widened, and new drains will be constructed at a cost of Rs 30 crore. A 500-plus bed hospital is expected to be ready by November 2025 at Silchar Medical College and Hospital, and instructions have been given to find a suitable location for the construction. Post completion, another 1,000-bed hospital will be constructed at the hospital.
The CM also announced that water supply schemes worth over Rs 100 crore have been approved for Hailakandi and Karimganj districts. During his visit, he also reviewed efforts to ramp up sporting infrastructure in the region.
