The Assam Cabinet has approved the establishment of Swahid Kanaklata Barua University at the Bholaguri Tea Estate in Gohpur, with a proposed investment of Rs 400 crore. Announcing the decision, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated, “This marks a historic moment for Assam,” emphasizing the project's transformative potential for education in the Northeast.
The government will acquire portions of land from the tea estate for the university’s development, which will require relocating some residents. The CM assured a comprehensive rehabilitation plan, including third and fourth-grade job opportunities and support under the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS).
Swahid Kanaklata Barua University is envisioned as Assam’s first institution dedicated to Industry 4.0 and 5.0 technologies. It will offer advanced programs in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, robotics, and other emerging fields. Experts from IIT Guwahati and Jawaharlal Nehru University will help shape the curriculum. Named after the iconic freedom fighter Swahid Kanaklata Barua, the university aims to honour her legacy of courage and catalyze Assam’s rise as a hub for next-generation education.
