The Rs.3,000 crore Bangalore-Mysore infrastructure corridor, promoted by Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises Ltd (NICE), has received clearance from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests, thereby paving the way for the project work to commence. The work is expected to start within the next three months.

The build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) project is to be implemented in three phases. It consists of five townships and 162 km of roadways (A 111 km six-lane tolled expressway, a 41 km tolled outer peripheral road linking NH 4 & 7 and a 10 km link road). The five self-sustaining townships along the corridor would be developed as counter-magnets to the cities of Bangalore and Mysore. When completed, the fenced expressway would halve the travel time between Bangalore and Mysore to around 90 minutes.

The Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board is acquiring 20,193 acres of land for NICE. Of this, 4,000 acres are for the expressway.

The project promoters include the Kalyani group, VHB International Ltd and SAB International Ltd. VHB International Ltd is the lead engineer of the project. NICE would own and operate the project for 30 years, subject to further extension. It hopes to complete the project within five years, or half the scheduled construction period.

In the first phase costing Rs.1,000 crore, 42 km of peripheral road, 9 km of ring road, 12 km of expressway from Bangalore and 10 km from Mysore and a township would be completed. The first phase is expected to be completed in 30 months’ time.

According to the managing director of NICE, Mr Ashok Kheny, financial closure is expected to be achieved within a few weeks. ICICI is the lead financing agency for the project and will underwrite the project.

In 2000, the project had received environmental clearance from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board. The promoters of the project have decided not only to pay compensation to those who will be displaced because of the project, but also to resettle them in one of the townships, so that they have access to all amenities.
