The long-delayed Sion bridge project has reached a significant milestone with the completion and opening of a new foot overbridge (FOB) for local residents.

This development clears the way for the demolition and reconstruction of the main Sion road bridge, a key east-west connector over the Central Railway (CR) tracks. The reconstruction, a joint effort by CR and the BMC, will address one of Mumbai's most persistent transport bottlenecks. The demolition of the ageing bridge is set to be completed by January 2026, with the new structure expected to be ready by May 2026.

The redesigned bridge will feature a wider span, accommodating additional railway lines for the Kurla-Dadar corridor expansion. The 110-year-old bridge had been deemed unsafe after a 2020 IIT audit highlighted risks associated with its age and structural integrity.
