The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved two major transport projects in Bihar worth Rs 7,616 crore.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that a four-lane greenfield highway will be built between Mokama and Munger, covering 82.4 km at a cost of Rs 4,447.38 crore under the hybrid annuity model (HAM). The highway, part of the Buxar–Bhagalpur corridor, will link Mokama, Barahiya, Lakhisarai, Jamalpur, Munger and Bhagalpur, boosting connectivity to key industrial hubs. Authorities expect it to cut travel time to 1.5 hours, support speeds of 100 kmph, and generate 3.3 million man-days of employment.
The CCEA also cleared the Rs 3,169 crore doubling of the Bhagalpur-Dumka-Rampurhat railway line spanning Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. Covering 177 km, the project will ease congestion, expand freight capacity by 15 million tonne annually, and improve access to pilgrimage sites like Deoghar and Tarapith. Officials estimate fuel savings of 50 million litres and a carbon dioxide reduction equivalent to "planting 10 million trees."
