The National Highways Logistics Management (NHLML) has called for detailed project reports (DPRs) for six proposed ropeway systems in Tamil Nadu, under the Union government’s Parvatmala Pariyojana initiative.
These corridors, located at sites such as Parvathamalai in Tiruvannamalai and Glenmorgan Power House in Ooty, aim to provide low-impact transport solutions for hilly regions and pilgrimage spots. Ranging from 0.5 km to 4.6 km in length, the projects will require consultants to conduct surveys, develop alignment options, and assess environmental impacts. NHLML also seeks to improve lastmile access and reduce travel time.
The six-month tender emphasises strict technical and financial qualifications for bidders. The initiative is part of a larger push to enhance connectivity in challenging terrains while supporting eco-friendly mobility. According to the report, the proposed corridors will help manage foot traffic and offer safer alternatives to steep trekking paths. At the same time, Chennai Metro Rail is looking into the feasibility of cable-propelled systems in Mamallapuram, Udhagamandalam, and Kodaikanal.
