The Central government has expedited two vital bypass projects in Ernakulam district aimed at easing traffic congestion along the busy NH-544 and NH-66 corridors.
These include the 20-km Angamaly-Kodungallur bypass, for which the NHAI has initiated the Detailed Project Report (DPR), and the 44-km Angamaly-Kundannoor bypass (Kochi New Bypass), for which a revised 3A notification will be issued in October 2025. The Kochi New Bypass will link Karayamparambu near Angamaly to Kundannoor, providing significant relief to Kochi city traffic. “The projects will greatly benefit those proceeding to Kochi airport and Thiruvananthapuram via NH 66,” said Chalakudy MP Benny Behanan, following assurance from Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.
The initial 3A notification, issued in August 2024, lapsed due to delays in land acquisition. A review chaired by Industries Minister P Rajeeve confirmed that surveys for the remaining areas will be completed within two months after reissuance. Land requirements were reduced from 290 to 201 hectares, with 160 hectares already surveyed and 19.5 hectares excluded.
