The Regional Board of the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has officially approved the establishment of a medical college at the ESI Hospital in Asansol.
The Medical Council of India (MCI) has already granted its nod for the project, which will be built on a 20-acre campus within the hospital premises. Asansol North MLA and state Labour Minister Moloy Ghatak confirmed that the tendering process will begin after the festive season. The development plan includes converting the hospital into a full-fledged, state-run medical college and hospital, adding 50 beds, and expanding medical infrastructure. A nursing college with 50 BSc seats is already functional within the hospital.
Currently, the hospital includes a dental unit, SNCU, ICU, and a 16-bed dialysis unit, catering to around 50,000 patients annually. With no existing government medical college in West Burdwan, this initiative aims to transform Asansol into a key healthcare hub for the region.
