The Tamil Nadu government has revived the eight-laning project on the Perungalathur flyover in Tamil Nadu. An allocation of Rs 12.8 crore has been made to complete pending work.
Under the Chennai Metropolitan Development Plan (CMDP), the highway department will widen the 1.5 km stretch beneath the flyover, including portions connecting approach arms, to an eight-lane road. This work is set for completion by mid-2025. Currently, parts of this stretch are only four lanes. CMDP plans to install new drains and clear obstacles to address challenges.
Additionally, new service roads along Gandhi Road in East Tambaram will provide improved access to the Chennai-Trichy highway, which sees 1.8 lakh vehicles in daily traffic. The project also includes completing the flyover's fourth arm, which will connect to the Tambaram Eastern Bypass. This arm's completion is essential, especially in addressing missing links in the Eastern Bypass Road.
The flyover, currently has three operational arms, with one connecting to Srinivasa Raghava Nagar, and the two running parallel to the national highway.
The first arm opened in 2022, with the other two in subsequent years.
