The Karnataka government has officially replaced the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) with the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) as the city's principal civic agency, following the implementation of the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024.
The change took effect on 15 May, 2025, after the bill was passed by both state legislative houses and signed by the Governor. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the move and will serve as the Chairman of the newly formed authority. The GBA will oversee multiple municipal corporations, each headed by an elected Mayor responsible for governing specific zones. These Corporations will function under the centralised GBA to ensure coordinated urban planning, infrastructure management, and service delivery across India’s IT capital.
The GBA incorporates several provisions from the Bengaluru Metropolitan Land Transport Authority for enhanced transport planning and coordination within the Bengaluru Metropolitan Area. It also brings together key agencies, including the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation, Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation, and the Bangalore Development Authority, issuing binding directives for these functions.
Though the GBA was initially intended to expand the city’s jurisdiction beyond BBMP’s 709-sq. km area to over 1,000 sq. km, incorporating peripheral villages, the government has currently put the expansion plans on hold, maintaining BBMP’s existing limits for now.
