In a significant boost to the 'Make in India' initiative, HMD Global, in collaboration with Free Stream Technologies, incubated at IIT Kanpur, Tejas Networks, and other industry partners, has announced its plans to manufacture and launch Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) phones in India.
D2M technology represents a cutting-edge advancement in next-generation communication, enabling direct transmission of over-the-top (OTT) content, live TV, audio, video, and even text messages to mobile devices without depending on Wi-Fi or traditional internet connectivity. The move is aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’ and is intended to fortify the country's self-reliance in tech manufacturing under the broader 'Make in India' programme.
As part of the initiative, a new range of affordable feature phones, smartphones, and tablets will be developed. These devices will be powered by the SL-3000 chipset from Saankhya Labs - an innovation that forms the backbone of the D2M technology.
Saankhya Labs’ chipset has been through extensive field testing across live networks, ensuring its readiness for commercial deployment. The collaboration with Free Stream Technologies brings academic innovation into the commercial domain, highlighting India's potential as a global tech hub. Tejas Networks' role in this project includes providing networking infrastructure and supporting the production of these D2M-enabled devices domestically.
