The Ministry of Power plans to develop an additional 97 GW coal and lignite-based thermal power capacity to achieve the projected requirement of 3,07,000 MW by 2034-35, Minister of State for Power Shripad Yesso Naik informed the Lok Sabha.
This is against the 2,11,855 MW installed capacity as of 31 March, 2023. As of June 2025, India’s total installed electricity generation capacity is 485 GW. According to the National Electricity Plan (May 2023), installed capacity is expected to touch 870 GW by 2031-32. Since April 2023, 11,680 MW thermal capacity has been commissioned, while 38,935 MW (including 5,695 MW stressed projects) is under construction. Contracts for 15,440 MW have been awarded in FY 2024-25.
Additionally, 35,460 MW of candidate thermal capacity is under planning. Hydro projects totalling 13,463.5 MW are under construction, with 9,802 MW planned by 2031-32. Renewable capacity under construction is 1,58,450 MW, while 62,000 MW is planned by 2029-30. These expansions align with India’s 500 GW renewable target by 2030 and net-zero goal by 2070.
