On 29 May, 2025, Delhi’s Power Minister Ashish Sood inaugurated India’s first commercially approved and South Asia’s largest standalone utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) at the 33 kV Kilokri Substation in New Delhi.
Developed by BSES Rajdhani Power with support from IndiGrid, the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), and TERI, the 20 MW battery storage system marks a significant step toward modernizing Delhi’s power infrastructure. Sood hailed the project as a historic milestone for Delhi and the nation, emphasizing that it sets new standards in technological and regulatory innovation.
The BESS is designed to improve grid reliability, reduce peak-hour load pressure, and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply, especially in densely populated and underserved areas. The model is expected to be replicated in unauthorised colonies and land-scarce regions across the city.
