India’s first large-scale biofuel and biochar carbon removal plant has opened in Hebri, Udupi, Karnataka.

Established by MASH Makes, the facility converts cashew industry waste into renewable biofuel and carbon-rich biochar, marking a significant step in clean energy innovation. Since its opening, the plant has processed over 7,000 tonne of biomass and produced 2,900 tonne of biochar and 1,050 tonne of biofuel. The biofuel is primarily used in shipping and heavy manufacturing, while biochar enhances soil productivity and generates carbon credits.

The plant, which began with one machine in April 2023, now employs 125 people. MASH Makes plans to expand its use of other crop residues, like coconut, for future projects. With India’s growing potential for carbon removal, the plant highlights both environmental and economic benefits, including local employment creation.
