Work on expanding the E M Bypass stretch at Laskarhat is progressing, with the construction of a new 45-mtrs.-long bridge that is expected to be open to traffic by early next year.
Once completed, the bridge will widen the Bypass to 34 mtrs. at the site, with 10 mtrs. allocated for service lanes. Currently, the culvert on the Science City-bound flank near Tagore Park is only 10 mtrs. wide, causing traffic slowdowns from both Science City and Ruby ends. Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA has completed 70 percent of the bridge construction, aiming to finish by December.
The project, which began in 2022, involved clearing high-tension electric cables along the canal bank. Additionally, KMDA plans another bridge to widen the culvert from the Vivekananda statue to Captain Bheri on the Science City-bound stretch. This initiative is expected to ease congestion and improve traffic flow on one of Kolkata's busiest roads.
