Indian Railways has successfully commissioned the indigenous Kavach 4.0 Automatic Train Protection System on the Mathura–Kota section of the high-density Delhi–Mumbai route, marking a major leap in railway safety modernisation. 

Approved by the Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO) in July 2024, Kavach 4.0 matches international safety standards. While many developed nations took 20–30 years to develop such systems, India achieved this in record time. For over 60 years after independence, advanced train protection systems were absent. Kavach now ensures safety by controlling train speed, applying brakes automatically, and displaying signal information on in-cab dashboards, even in fog.

Indian Railways plans to expand Kavach 4.0 nationwide within six years. Over 30,000 personnel have been trained, and IRISET has partnered with 17 AICTE-approved engineering institutions to include Kavach in BTech curricula. This initiative strengthens India’s self-reliance in rail safety technology and safeguards millions of passengers daily.
