Kochi Corporation is advancing multiple technologies to achieve a sustainable solution to its wastemanagement challenges, as a Rs 90-crore compressed biogas (CBG) plant at Brahmapuram is set for commissioning, with trial runs for food-waste processing already initiated.
Once fully operational, the plant, to be implemented by Bharat Petroleum Company, will handle 150 tonne of biodegradable waste daily, generating 15 tonne of biogas, initially starting with 75 tonne. A Rs 60.96-crore windrow-compost plant, designed to process 50 tonne of waste, has also been proposed under the Brahmapuram master plan, and is expected to be completed within a year.
Alongside, the black soldier fly (BSF) plant at Brahmapuram will remain functional, while a waste-to-energy plant is also planned. Together, these facilities will provide a processing capacity exceeding 250 tonne daily, ensuring uninterrupted operations even if one technology falters. Officials stress that decentralised treatment facilities at Ponnurunni, Ravipuram, and other locations will further strengthen the system.
