Kolkata's northern suburbs may access the airport via Metro line with operations expected to start by June or July.
The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) will inspect the seven km Noapara-Airport (Jai Hind Metro station) corridor in April. The new Metro station, located 13 mtrs. below Kolkata's airport, is among Asia's largest underground facilities. It is part of the Yellow Line’s Phase I, an 18 km Noapara-Barasat corridor.
Originally, Phase-I included only the three km Noapara-Dum Dum Cantonment stretch, which has already received CRS approval. However, Metro Railway extended the project by four km to provide Kolkata with its first airport metro connectivity sooner.
The Airport Metro station spans 29,000 sq. mtrs. and features a spacious concourse with five platforms. Initially, only platforms 1 and 2 will be operational, while platforms 3, 4, and 5 are designated for the Orange Line (New Garia-Airport corridor), which will connect with the Yellow Line at the airport. The daily ridership is projected to reach 80,000 passengers.
