Larsen & Toubro’s ECC division has
bagged a Rs.37.53 crore contract to build a steel bridge over Jhajjar Khad on
the Udhampur-Katra Rail Link being laid in the Jammu sector of the Northern
Railway.
This bridge would also be one of the tallest
bridges (with an 85 metre high single pier support). It would have 2 spans of
154 m each. According to reports, this is the first time that the Railways
would be going in for such a long span bridge.
The bridge would be supported by (well foundation)
abutments at either end, with a single pier in between. The 1,800-tonne bridge
would be constructed of high-tensile steel fabrication for the superstructure
in triangulated girders (warren type steel truss) and is to be erected by
`incremental launching' method from one end with a launching nose.
The contract also includes the construction of a
second bridge over Gambhir Khad on the Jammu-Udampur Rail Link. This bridge
comprising 3 girder spans of 80 m, 102 m and 102 m, would be supported on 2
piers, (50 m to 70 m in height) and abutments to be built with open foundation.
The piers, which have been partly constructed, would be suitably modified and
completed to support the superstructure, which would also be incrementally
launched.
