The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) is set to launch a Rs 750 crore initiative to build 15 compressed biogas (CBG) plants in Gujarat, Goa, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Odisha, and Bihar.
Each plant will process 100 tonne of cow dung daily, requiring over 1,500 tonne of dung daily across all plants. Farmers supplying dung will be paid up to Rs one per kilogram, creating an additional income source while tackling rural sanitation and foul odours. “Most of these new plants will produce purified biogas compressed as Bio CNG for vehicle fuel,” said Meneesh Shah, NDDB Chairman.
Existing collaborations include Gujarat’s Banas Dairy and Suzuki’s Indian subsidiary, with plants under construction and operations already underway in Varanasi and Banaskantha. NDDB is also working with NABARD for green financing.
Additionally, a partnership with NGO Sustain Plus aims to install 10,000 biogas digesters across 15 states, generating organic manure and providing clean cooking fuel to rural households, promoting sustainable farming and clean energy.
