The national highways wing of the state highways department has sent a proposal to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to expand the narrow two-lane L&T Bypass Road into a six-lane from Neelambur to Madukkarai (27.2 km) in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
The proposal was formulated and sent last month following the death of 120 motorists in fatal road accidents on the stretch last year.
The NH wing had already acquired 45-mtrs. width of land along the 27.2 km stretch. The proposal was formulated and sent last month following the death of 120 motorists in fatal road accidents on the stretch last year. People travelling to Bengaluru or Chennai from Kerala use the road and trucks use the stretch to reach Kerala, Chennai, or Bengaluru.
L&T Group entered into an agreement with the MoRTH in 1999 to maintain the Neelambur-Madukkarai stretch till 2029.
