OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, is in preliminary discussions with leading Indian data centre companies — Sify Technologies, Yotta Data Services, E2E Networks, and CtrlS Datacenters, to bring its USD 500 billion global joint venture supercomputing project, Stargate, to India.
Parallel conversations have also been ongoing for over six months with Reliance Industries, which plans to establish the world’s largest data centre at Jamnagar, Gujarat. The talks have covered critical factors such as installed capacities, geographical spread, and power availability, which remain essential prerequisites before finalising partnerships. If materialised, Stargate’s entry into India could position the country as a significant hub in the global artificial intelligence infrastructure network.
Reliance’s Jamnagar project, coupled with the involvement of top domestic data centre providers, is expected to bolster India’s role in AIdriven digital transformation. “India’s growing data infrastructure makes it a natural contender for such nextgen projects,” a source highlighted, underlining the country’s strategic appeal for OpenAI’s long-term plans.
