Coal India (CIL) is exploring the setting up of data centres in its decommissioned mines, leveraging existing infrastructure to meet India’s rising digital demand while promoting sustainable development.
Officials confirmed that consultants have been engaged for a comprehensive feasibility study, including site assessments and a preliminary feasibility report (PFR). Four locations—Umrer (WCL), Saraipali in Korba (SECL), Himgir Rampur near Jharsuguda (MCL), and Nigahi (NCL)—have been shortlisted. "The scope of work involved a detailed analysis of the data centre industry in India and globally, classification of models such as hyperscale, colocation and edge facilities, and key demand drivers including digitisation, artificial intelligence, IoT, 5G rollout and cloud adoption," a source said.
The study will assess demand forecasts, regulatory compliance, power and cooling needs, connectivity gaps, environmental and geotechnical challenges. CIL aims to align diversification with "Digital India" and "Make in India" while optimally reusing mining assets. The final report is expected by Q3/FY26. India’s data centre sector may attract USD 20–25 billion investments over the next six years.
