The Union Minister of Power, Mr Suresh
Prabhu, will inaugurate Power Grid Corporation of India's Southern region - II
headquarter at Bangalore (Karnataka) on 21 July 2001.
The Southern region – II transmission
system consists of around 3,000 ckm of EHV transmission lines and eight sub-stations
spread over Tamil Nadu, Kerala and parts of Karnataka, with a transformation
capacity of 2,890 MVA. The gas insulated sub-station at Kayamkulam, the first
in India, is part of this transmission system.
Power Grid is diversifying into the
telecommunications sector through establishment of a national backbone telecom
network of 13,800 km connecting 56 major cities in India, in a phased manner.
The opening of the company’s new office in Bangalore, known as India’s Silicon
Valley, will strengthen its endeavour in that direction and will initiate
significant revolution in the areas of high-end telecommunication with optical
fibre technologies.
