Significant progress has been made on the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway 48 (Satara-Kagal stretch) flyover project, with 1,223 pre-cast concrete segments installed along Karad city.
Each segment, weighing 125–135 tonne, spans a total distance of 3.5 km and is fitted onto 93 single pillars. The segments are manufactured in a nearby casting facility and transported to the site before being lifted and secured using heavy-duty nuts, iron bars, and cement for long-term durability.
The six-laning project, launched in October 2021 with its foundation stone laid by Union Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, has faced delays due to worker shortages and payment issues, but work is now progressing rapidly. The bridge will be elevated on both sides, with 70 percent work done on the Kolhapur end, while the Pune end is yet to begin. Once completed, the elevated flyover will ease congestion along the busy highway and improve traffic flow near Karad.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) then extended the contractor’s deadline to March 2025. The project cost is estimated at around Rs 500 crore.
