Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) to begin the land acquisition process for the proposed Purandar International Airport. This initiative follows the recent efforts of Union Minister of State Muralidhar Mohol to advance the project.
The next step in the process is the completion of the detailed project report (DPR), scheduled for September 2025. The objective is to make the airport operational by March 2029. Union MoS for Civil Aviation, Muralidhar Mohol, emphasised the growing importance of air transport and the need to expand infrastructure to accommodate the sector's rapid development.
“Air transport is the fastest growing sector and infrastructure will have to be expanded considering growth in this sector. The Minister stated, “Pune and its surroundings are developing rapidly and the number of air passengers and air traffic is increasing. Against this backdrop, the current airport of Pune is well-equipped with modern amenities. Still, considering the future of Pune city, target is to complete Purandar airport.”
With the initiation of the land acquisition process, the project is expected to move forward, bringing Pune one step closer to having an international airport to support its growing transportation needs.
