The demand for a greenfield airport in Ganjam district of Odisha has resurfaced, with residents and leaders urging both state and Central governments for urgent action.
The issue gained traction after the Central government identified land for a new airport just 30 km away in Andhra Pradesh. Odisha’s Transport Minister has pressed for a similar facility at Subani, on the Odisha-Andhra border, highlighting its potential to serve communities in both states and spur regional growth. Public opinion, however, is divided. While some back Subani, others prefer a more central location within Ganjam for wider accessibility. Alternative sites, including 500 acres near Laxmipur mouza and 500 acres near Sorada have also been suggested.
Meanwhile, the Rengeilunda airstrip, limited by its small runway, is undergoing upgrades with plans for runway extension, cabling, and land acquisition. Authorities expect it to be functional by January, keeping hopes alive for better aviation connectivity in southern Odisha.
