Rajasthan, especially in the western districts, is set to get a permanent solution for drinking water supply with the initiation of a Rs 7,000 crore project linking Mahi Dam to Jawai Dam.
An important meeting regarding this initiative was held on August 6 between Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma and Sumerpur MLA and Animal Husbandry Minister Zoraram Kumawat. The project aims to supply drinking water to Pali, Jalore, Sirohi, and Barmer districts. In the meeting, discussions were held on preparing the detailed project report (DPR).
Minister Kumawat highlighted that the CM had previously announced in the 2024-25 Budget the plan to utilise surplus monsoon water from Mahi and Som rivers, channeling it through dams like Jaisamand to reach Jawai Dam. To act on this, the Chief Engineer’s Office of the Water Resources Department, Jaipur, has sanctioned Rs 15.60 crore for the DPR preparation, with work orders issued to WAPCOS. The inspection report has been submitted and approved by the Udaipur Water Resources Division.
Once complete, this ambitious project is expected to ensure reliable drinking water and provide irrigation to 16,000 hectares across Udaipur, Sirohi, Pali, and Jodhpur districts.
