Water Resources Minister Subhash Shirodkar has announced that North Goa’s water shortage issues will be resolved by March 2026 with the commissioning of a new 250 million litres per day (MLD) water treatment plant at Sal.
Speaking during the assembly discussion on WRD grants, the Minister emphasized that the department is working on a war footing to complete the project. Once operational, the plant will augment the existing capacity of 120-130 MLD, benefiting regions like Pernem, Calangute, and Candolim. In addition, the government has begun surveys and is seeking approvals for three to four new dams to further secure the state’s water needs.
Minister Shirodkar also addressed flood mitigation efforts, revealing that the government plans to desilt the Kushawati River at Paroda to prevent blockages and reduce flooding. He stated the desilting would cost approx. Three to four crore and that the process is already underway. If needed, support from the National Institute of Oceanography will be sought for the desilting operation.
