Mumbai is set to get a major cultural boost with the development of a cultural centre, state museum, and archives at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has reallocated two prime plots for this initiative, shifting their earlier reservations. One 14,148 sq. mtrs. plot, earlier marked for a “municipal stadium and open space,” will now house a cultural centre and museum with commercial uses. Its permissible FSI has been raised from 2 to 5. Another 8,291 sq m plot, earlier reserved for a “social facility,” has been redesignated for a “State Archives Bhavan,” also with FSI of five instead of 1.5.
The cultural centre will feature an auditorium, art galleries, and a research hub, promoting cultural exchange and attracting global tourists. Officials said the museum will be modelled on the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya and Bhau Daji Lad Museum.
“This is the first time a standalone archives building will be developed for Maharashtra,” a cultural affairs official noted. The archives will house 17 crore historical documents, including 10.5 crore in Mumbai.
