The Tiruchi Corporation is accelerating the construction of a modern sewage treatment plant (STP) at Panjapur, under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0.
Estimated at Rs 220 crore, the new facility aims to treat 100 million litres per day (MLD) of sewage, replacing the outdated plant. The new plant will employ sequencing batch reactor technology for efficient treatment, ensuring water quality meets National Green Tribunal and Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board standards. This will cater to Tiruchi's future sewage demands, which are expected to rise to 140 MLD by 2031. Construction began in March 2024, with the aim to complete the project by February 2026.
Officials have been conducting frequent inspections to oversee progress, and the contractor has been asked to further expedite the works. The modern facility will be significantly smaller in size but more efficient than the existing one, which occupies 247.5 acres. Once operational, the old plant will be dismantled and repurposed.
