Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced on 06 September, 2025 that the state government is set to revive the Dumboor power plant to generate 11 MW of electricity, up from its earlier three MW capacity that was damaged by floods.
The initiative forms part of a strategic shift toward renewable energy, as dwindling natural gas reserves are undermining generation at Rukhia, Palatana, Ramchandra Nagar, and Monarchak plants. Speaking at an awareness camp on the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana in Unakoti district, Minister Nath emphasised the importance of preparing for the future through inclusive energy planning. He highlighted that solar power is the most sustainable alternative, with potential to reduce electricity bills while enabling households to earn through surplus generation.
Under the central scheme, launched in February 2024, rooftop and ground-based solar panels are promoted across India. Tripura aims to equip 50,000 households with panels, collectively generating 150 MW. With around 10 lakh electricity consumers, the state views this transition as critical to ensuring long-term energy security.
