World Bank has agreed to extend a USD 477 million (approx. Rs 4,000 crore) loan to the Telangana government to enhance healthcare infrastructure and services under the ‘Telangana Strategic Vision for Attaining Sustainable Transformation in Healthcare’ project.
The state had sought the loan in 2024 to upgrade medical facilities and tackle pressing health challenges. The appraisal of the loan is scheduled for November 2025, with final approval expected in February 2026. The Department of Health, Medical and Family Welfare (DoHMFW) will serve as the implementing agency. The total cost of the project is estimated at USD 1,380.19 million, with the World Bank financing USD 477 million. The state government will contribute the remaining USD 904.19 million.
The programme, linked to four key government entities, aligns with a broader health initiative valued at USD 4.9 billion over six years. Notable components include trauma and dialysis centres, vascular access facilities, organ retrieval units, super-specialty hospital equipment, drug de-addiction centres, and upgrades to maternal and child health services. "This initiative represents a comprehensive step toward strengthening Telangana’s healthcare delivery system," said officials.
