Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India, is likely to inaugurate the Pir Panjal rail tunnel on 26 June 2013.
The 11-km long tunnel is part of the 345-km Jammu-Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail line and it will connect the Bichelri valley of Banihal in Jammu with Qazikund in Kashmir. The tunnel was constructed with an investment of Rs 800 crore.
The horseshoe shaped diversion tunnel, created for generating hydropower will benefit Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi and Chandigarh.
