Reliance Energy has bagged the mandate
for constructing Line 1 of the Mumbai metro rail project, according to
unconfirmed reports. The official announcement will be made only by the end of
May 2006. The Reliance consortium includes Connex of France and Metro Rail of
Hong Kong.
Line 1 is a 15-km link between Versova
and Ghatkopar, via Andheri. Phase I will have three lines with a total length of
63.8 km. The total estimated cost of Phase I is Rs.6,585 crore. The indicative
cost of Line 1 is Rs.1,250 crore.
It is further reported that Reliance
Energy has sought First Right of Refusal status for the other two lines. This
would help in achieving economies of scale whilst executing the entire project.
