The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the establishment of 57 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) across 17 states and union territories to cater to the educational needs of children of Central government employees.
The project involves an outlay of Rs 5,862.55 crore spread over nine years starting from 2026-27, including Rs 2,585.52 crore for capital expenditure and Rs 3,277.03 crore for operational costs. For the first time, these schools will feature Balvatikas, introducing three years of foundational pre-primary education. Of the sanctioned schools, 20 will be opened in districts without an existing KV, 14 in Aspirational districts, 4 in Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) affected areas, and five in North Eastern and hilly regions.
Seven schools will be sponsored by the Ministry of Home Affairs, while 50 will be supported by state and UT authorities. Currently, there are 1,288 functional KVs with over 13.62 lakh students enrolled.
