Central Railway has completed a Rs 74.5 crore upgrade of Karjat Yard, a key junction on the Mumbai–Pune route, enhancing train operations with a new Route Relay Interlocking (RRI) system.
Operational since October 13 at 6:30 PM, the system replaces one of the oldest RRIs on Central Railway, enabling faster, safer, and more efficient train movements. Located at the base of the Khandala Ghat, Karjat connects routes to Pune, Khopoli, Mumbai, and Panvel. The new RRI system features 487 routes, 46 main signals, and 39 shunt signals with dual detection using MSDAC and AFTC for enhanced reliability. Automatic Block Signalling, realtime monitoring via Efftronics Data Loggers, and advanced safety mechanisms ensure seamless and secure train operation.
The remodelling includes a new fourth line between Karjat and Palasdari, separating Khopoli-bound traffic from the Ghat section and eliminating conflicting movements. Reception lines have been extended and standardised, allowing full-length goods trains to be handled seamlessly. Overall, the project increases the yard's capacity by 25 percent, supporting smoother suburban and longdistance services on this high-traffic corridor.
