On 19 November 2013, Mallikarjun Kharge, Union Minister of Railways, commissioned the newly laid broad gauge railway line of Chikmagalur-Kadur section.
Apart from commissioning of the Chikmagalur-Kadur section, the minister flagged off the Chikmagalur-Kadur-Shimoga town passenger train at the Chikmagalur railway station.
The train from Chikmagalur will pass through Bisalehalli, Sakarayapatna and Kanivehalli villages of Chikmagalur district. With the introduction of the Chikmagalur-Kadur-Shimoga town passenger train, the local public will get better connectivity to Hubli, Mumbai and Bangalore city from Kadur.
Besides, Phase-II of the project includes connecting Chikmagalur and Sakleshpur in Hassan district. A survey of the project, estimated to be worth over Rs 650 crore, has been completed. However, land has to be acquired and the union government has to give environment clearance.
On the other hand, the railway lines connecting Tumkur-Davangere and Harihar-Kottur have been delayed because of issues with land acquisition.
