The Delhi Jal Board (DJB), in its 173rd meeting, approved sewage treatment plant (STP) augmentation and upgradation projects worth Rs 917.33 crore to boost efforts for cleaning the Yamuna River.
The projects will add 51.5 million gallons per day (MGD) of sewage treatment capacity through infrastructure upgrades, new plants, and long-term operations and maintenance. Key works include enhancing the Yamuna Vihar Phase-III STP from 25 MGD to 40 MGD and building a new 15 MGD Phase-IV unit under a Rs 403 crore package with 12 years of operation and maintenance (O&M). Another Rs 133.33 crore project will upgrade Keshopur STP Phase-I from 12 MGD to 18 MGD with 11 years of O&M.
Additionally, Rs 381 crore will be invested to enhance five STPs in south and south-west Delhi—Vasant Kunj Phases I & II, Ghitorni, Mehrauli, and Okhla Phase-V, adding 15.5 MGD capacity with 12 years of O&M. Officials said these upgrades will modernise wastewater infrastructure, meet DPCC and NGT norms, and reduce untreated sewage inflow into the Yamuna.
