Delhi government is planning to
involve private developers for the Delhi slum redevelopment projects. Several
real estate firms, including India's largest real estate developer DLF, Omaxe
and Raheja Developers, have already elicited interest in these projects and are
waiting for the government's nod.
According to the plan, the developers
will be allowed to build houses for slum dwellers and in return get a portion of
the total space for development which they can sell at market rates. Delhi has
around 900 slum clusters housing almost a fifth of its population and the
initiative is to redevelop 30 clusters.
Apart from redevelopment of Karol Bagh
and Sarojini Nagar, many other shopping arcades and centres will be remodelled
on similar lines. This includes Nehru Place, Rajendra Place, Bhikaji Cama Place,
Janakpuri, Laxmi Nagar, Shivaji Place (Raja Garden), Jhandewalan, Netaji Subhash
Place (Wazirpur), Saket and Manglam Place (Rohini).
