Gandhi Hill in Vijayawada, home to India’s first hilltop memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, is undergoing a major transformation into a premier cultural and tourist destination.
Following a Rs 1.20 crore facelift in the first phase, a Rs 90-crore Master Plan aims to develop the site into the ‘Gandhi India International Centre’. New attractions include a 43-mtrs. high lift, modernised play areas, floral landscaping, improved sanitation facilities, and a scenic viewpoint. The iconic toy train is being revived, while replicas of Sabarmati Ashram, Sevagram, and Porbandar Gandhi House have been renovated. A planetarium, fine arts academy, library, convention hall, and guest accommodations are planned.
Currently attracting around 5,000 visitors daily, the site is expected to draw nearly 10,000 once fully developed. The Gandhi Hill Foundation, led by Dr Gandhi PC Kaza, envisions the space as a vibrant hub for peace, culture, and education. District authorities have pledged full support to transform the hill into a beacon of Gandhian values and international tourism.
