The Maharashtra government has announced plans to build a new film city in Igatpuri, Nashik district, to decongest Mumbai’s Goregaon Film City and attract Bollywood productions.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar directed the revenue department to transfer 47 hectares of land in Mundhegaon, Igatpuri, to the cultural affairs department for the project. Igatpuri’s scenic landscape and proximity, with less than two hours from Mumbai via the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway, make it an ideal location for film and serial shoots. The proposal had been under consideration since 2009, with three possible sites examined before finalising Igatpuri.
Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, who has long advocated for the project, highlighted the advantages for filmmakers, noting the ease of access and picturesque setting. The initiative also comes as states like Uttar Pradesh increasingly compete for Bollywood’s attention by offering modern studios and infrastructure. The new film city is expected to boost local tourism, generate employment, and stimulate regional development.
